Charlie Hunnam Reunites Sons of Anarchy Cast for FX’s Legends
More than a decade after Sons of Anarchy ended, Charlie Hunnam is bringing several of his former co-stars back together for a very different kind of reunion.
FX has announced Legends, a new limited meta-thriller developed and executive produced by Hunnam. The project will reunite Hunnam with Ron Perlman, Katey Sagal, Maggie Siff, Mark Boone Junior, Tommy Flanagan, Kim Coates and Theo Rossi.
However, fans should not expect Hunnam to simply return as Jax Teller. The new series takes a self-aware approach by having the actors play themselves.
What Is FX’s Legends About?
Legends begins with the cast of Sons of Anarchy coming together at a fan convention more than 10 years after the original series ended.
What starts as a nostalgic reunion soon turns dangerous. According to the series premise, the boundary between the actors’ real lives and their television identities begins to disappear when they face a real-world threat.
That setup makes Legends different from a conventional sequel. Instead of continuing the story of SAMCRO and its fictional characters, the series uses the relationship between the actors, their shared history and the show’s fan base as part of the story.
Which Sons of Anarchy Stars Are Returning?
The announced cast brings together several of the most recognisable faces from the original FX drama.
The returning actors are:
- Charlie Hunnam
- Ron Perlman
- Katey Sagal
- Maggie Siff
- Mark Boone Junior
- Tommy Flanagan
- Kim Coates
- Theo Rossi
Importantly, these performers are not simply reprising their Sons of Anarchy characters. The premise places them in the story as themselves, giving the project its unusual meta-fiction angle.
That means long-time viewers can see Hunnam, Perlman, Sagal and the rest of the group together again without requiring the original storyline to be reopened.
Charlie Hunnam Is Behind the New Project
Hunnam is taking on a larger creative role with Legends. He developed the project and is attached as a writer, performer and executive producer.
Jonathan Groff is also involved as showrunner, while Rob Mac, Nicholas Frenkel and Jackie Cohn are among the other executive producers. FX Productions and 20th Television are producing the series.
FX Entertainment president Nick Grad has praised Hunnam’s vision for the project, describing it as both a tribute to Sons of Anarchy and a playful twist on what audiences expect from the franchise.
Is Jax Teller Returning in Legends?
Not in the traditional sense.
Hunnam became closely associated with Jax Teller during Sons of Anarchy‘s seven-season run, but Legends is built around the real-life cast rather than a continuation of Jax’s fictional journey.
That distinction is important because the original series concluded in 2014. Rather than undoing its ending, Legends creates a separate story in which the actors themselves become part of the action.
For fans, that could offer a way to revisit the chemistry of the original cast without changing the ending of the original drama.
What Happened to Sons of Anarchy?
Sons of Anarchy premiered on FX in 2008 and followed the outlaw motorcycle club SAMCRO in the fictional California town of Charming.
Hunnam played Jax Teller, while Perlman portrayed Clay Morrow and Sagal played Gemma Teller Morrow. The series ran for seven seasons before ending in 2014. FX later expanded the franchise with Mayans M.C., which ran from 2018 through 2023.
The original show’s ending made a straightforward continuation difficult. Legends instead takes the franchise in a more unconventional direction by putting the actors at the centre of the story.
Is Kurt Sutter Involved in Legends?
Kurt Sutter, the creator of Sons of Anarchy, is not listed as part of the Legends project.
The new series is being led creatively by Hunnam and Jonathan Groff, with Hunnam serving as one of its key creative forces.
This makes Legends a new interpretation of the Sons of Anarchy legacy rather than a direct continuation from the show’s original creator.
When Will Legends Premiere?
FX has announced Legends as a limited series, but a premiere date has not yet been announced.
The series is expected to air through FX and Hulu in the United States.
More information about the release schedule, episode count and additional cast members may be revealed as production moves forward.
Why the Sons of Anarchy Reunion Matters
For Sons of Anarchy fans, the biggest attraction may simply be seeing so many original cast members together again.
At the same time, Legends is not trying to recreate the original show beat for beat. Its premise gives Hunnam and the returning cast an opportunity to play with the audience’s familiarity with the franchise.
The result is a reunion story with a twist: the people fans remember from Sons of Anarchy return, but this time, the actors themselves are part of the danger.
That approach also allows the new series to acknowledge the show’s history without rewriting its original ending.
