Sean Palmer Reveals Scrapped Sex and the City Movie Wedding Twist

Sex and the City fans have learned about a major storyline that almost changed the opening of the franchise’s first movie.

Sean Palmer, who played Marcus in Sex and the City, revealed that the 2008 film was once planned to begin with a wedding involving his character and Stanford Blatch, played by the late Willie Garson.

Palmer discussed the unused storyline during an appearance on Kristin Davis’ podcast Are You a Charlotte? on August 31, 2026. The episode revisited his character, his time on the HBO series and his memories of working with Garson.

Sean Palmer Says the Movie Had a Different Opening

According to Palmer, the proposed opening was designed to make viewers believe they were watching Carrie Bradshaw and Mr Big finally get married.

Instead, the ceremony would have revealed that the couple at the centre of the opening were Stanford and Marcus.

The idea would have created an immediate surprise for long-time viewers. Stanford was one of Carrie’s closest friends, while Marcus was introduced as his boyfriend during the show’s later seasons.

However, the concept did not make it into the finished movie.

Palmer said he was eventually told that the studio did not want the film to focus on what he described as “tertiary characters”. As a result, Marcus was removed from the movie altogether.

Why Marcus Was Still Mentioned in the Film

Although Palmer did not appear in the finished Sex and the City movie, the character was not completely forgotten.

Palmer said Marcus’ name appeared on the guest list connected to Carrie and Big’s wedding.

That small detail gave fans a subtle reminder of Stanford’s relationship and the wider group of characters surrounding Carrie.

The finished 2008 movie took a very different route. Carrie and Big’s highly anticipated wedding became one of the film’s central storylines, with Big backing out shortly before the ceremony. The pair eventually reconciled and married in a much smaller ceremony.

Sean Palmer Did Not Expect Stanford and Marcus to Be Endgame

Interestingly, Palmer does not believe Stanford and Marcus were necessarily destined to remain together.

Looking back at the series, he said he felt Stanford’s eventual romantic future made more sense with Anthony Marantino, the character played by Mario Cantone.

That prediction became particularly notable when the franchise later paired Stanford and Anthony.

Their relationship became a major part of Sex and the City 2, which centered in part on their wedding.

So while the original movie could have opened with Stanford and Marcus exchanging vows, the story ultimately moved in another direction.

Palmer Remembers Willie Garson Fondly

The revelation also carried an emotional element because Palmer was discussing his memories of Willie Garson.

Garson, who played Stanford Blatch throughout the original series and its movie appearances, died in September 2021 at age 57. His death was announced by his son. An obituary later reported that Garson had died following pancreatic cancer.

During the podcast conversation, Palmer recalled meeting Garson while being fitted for costumes on Sex and the City.

Palmer described Garson as supportive and kind, particularly when Palmer was adjusting to the experience of joining such a well-known television series.

For Palmer, those memories appear to have remained meaningful years after the show ended.

The Sex and the City Movie Could Have Started Very Differently

The unused wedding concept is another example of how dramatically a major movie can change before reaching theatres.

The final Sex and the City movie focused heavily on Carrie and Big’s relationship. Their wedding became the emotional centre of the story, while the four women faced major changes in their personal lives.

The finished film was released in 2008 and starred Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Cynthia Nixon, Kristin Davis and Chris Noth.

Had Palmer’s proposed opening survived, audiences would have entered the movie expecting one wedding before discovering that the ceremony belonged to Stanford and Marcus.

Instead, the filmmakers chose to keep the spotlight firmly on Carrie and Big.

What Happened to Stanford and Marcus?

Stanford and Marcus ultimately did not become the lasting couple that Palmer imagined might happen.

Stanford later found a romantic connection with Anthony Marantino. Their relationship became part of the second Sex and the City movie, where the pair prepared to marry.

That makes Palmer’s newly revealed storyline especially interesting in hindsight.

The character who might once have opened the first movie with a wedding to Marcus eventually received a different romantic ending within the franchise.
