Michael Wright Dies at 70: The Five Heartbeats Actor Remembered

Michael Wright Dies at 70

Actor Michael Wright, widely remembered for his performances in The Five Heartbeats and the science-fiction series V, has died at age 70.

Wright died in Los Angeles on Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2026. His wife, Susan Wright, announced his death on Instagram on Friday, Aug. 21. The family later shared details about his health with TMZ.

According to the family’s statement, Wright died after suffering heart failure along with complications from Marchiafava-Bignami disease, a rare degenerative neurological condition.

Susan’s announcement focused not only on Wright’s career but also on the person behind his many memorable screen roles. She described him as a husband, friend and artist whose work reached generations.

The family has asked for privacy while grieving. They also said more information about Wright’s life, legacy and plans to honour him will be shared later.

Michael Wright’s Cause of Death

Wright’s family said his death followed heart failure and complications from Marchiafava-Bignami disease.

Marchiafava-Bignami disease is a rare neurological disorder. It affects the corpus callosum, the part of the brain that connects its two hemispheres. Because it is uncommon, details about individual cases can be limited.

In Wright’s case, his family identified the neurological disease as a contributing complication. His death was reported in Los Angeles on Aug. 19.

A Career That Spanned More Than Four Decades

Born in New York City on April 30, 1956, Wright began his screen career in the late 1970s.

His first film role came in The Wanderers in 1979. He followed that with appearances across film and television, building a career that eventually included more than 50 screen credits.

One of his early major projects was Robert Altman’s Streamers, released in 1983. Wright was part of the ensemble that shared the Best Actor award at the Venice Film Festival for the film.

He also became familiar to television audiences through the science-fiction franchise V. Wright played Elias Taylor in the 1983 miniseries and continued the role in subsequent V productions.

Eddie King Jr Became One of His Defining Roles

For many viewers, however, Wright’s most enduring performance came in 1991’s The Five Heartbeats.

Directed by Robert Townsend, the musical drama followed a fictional male singing group inspired by the history of Black vocal groups. Wright played Eddie King Jr., one of the group’s central performers.

The role allowed Wright to show both his dramatic range and his ability to portray a complicated character dealing with personal struggles.

The Five Heartbeats remained an important part of Wright’s legacy long after its original release. His performance continues to be one of the roles most closely associated with his career.

Michael Wright’s Other Notable Roles

Wright’s filmography extended well beyond The Five Heartbeats.

His movie credits included:

  • The Wanderers (1979)
  • Streamers (1983)
  • The Principal (1987)
  • The Five Heartbeats (1991)
  • Sugar Hill (1994)
  • Money Talks
  • Point Blank
  • The Interpreter

On television, he appeared in projects including V, Miami Vice, New York Undercover and HBO’s Oz. He also appeared in Black Lightning.

His screen career continued into the 2020s. Wright appeared in the 2025 film Dope King, where he was credited as Willie.

Susan Wright Pays Tribute to Her Husband

Susan Wright shared the news of her husband’s death through an Instagram post accompanied by photographs from his life and career.

Her tribute highlighted the difference between Wright’s public legacy and his private life. While audiences knew him through decades of performances, Susan emphasised his importance to the people closest to him.

The family also expressed gratitude for the condolences and support already being offered by fans and friends.

They have requested privacy as they navigate the loss.

Michael Wright’s Legacy

Wright leaves behind a body of work that stretches across film, television and several different genres.

From the gritty drama of The Wanderers to Streamers, the science fiction of V, the musical drama of The Five Heartbeats and the HBO series Oz, his roles demonstrated considerable range.

His performance as Eddie King Jr. is likely to remain especially significant for audiences who grew up with The Five Heartbeats. At the same time, his wider filmography shows a career that was much broader than a single celebrated role.

Wright is survived by his wife, five children and a grandchild, according to reports citing his family.

As his family prepares to share more about his life and legacy, fans are once again revisiting the performances that made Michael Wright a familiar and respected presence on screen.
