More than two decades after Friends ended, Lisa Kudrow remains closely associated with Phoebe Buffay and one of the sitcom’s most recognisable songs. However, there is one request from fans that the actress would rather not fulfil: singing “Smelly Cat”.
Kudrow discussed the subject during a recent appearance on NPR’s Fresh Air with Terry Gross & Tonya Mosley. While she remains deeply appreciative of her time on Friends, she made it clear that she does not want to perform Phoebe’s famous song whenever fans ask.
“Sometimes people will stop me and say, ‘Oh, sing Smelly Cat,’” Kudrow said. “I don’t want to do that. I really don’t want to do that.”

For Friends viewers, “Smelly Cat” is inseparable from Phoebe Buffay. The fictional musician performed the quirky song throughout the sitcom, turning it into one of the character’s most memorable running jokes.
Kudrow, however, does not appear to share fans’ desire to hear the song whenever she meets them.
Her comments do not suggest that she has negative feelings toward Phoebe or Friends. Instead, they show that the actress has drawn a personal boundary around performing the song outside the context of the show.
That distinction is important because Kudrow has performed “Smelly Cat” publicly in the past. She famously joined Taylor Swift onstage for a performance of the song during Swift’s Eras Tour in 2024.

The actors also made an effort to spend time together when they were not filming. Kudrow recalled that the cast played poker during downtime and used breaks on set to maintain their close relationships.

After spending a decade bringing Phoebe Buffay to life, she has earned the freedom to decide when — and whether — she wants to step back into that musical part of the character.
