Lili Reinhart’s Pink Dress Pays Tribute to ‘My Date with the President’s Daughter’

Lili Reinhart brought a nostalgic ’90s fashion reference to the Los Angeles premiere of The Love Hypothesis. The actress wore a custom pink Miu Miu dress inspired by Elisabeth Harnois’ memorable look from the 1998 Disney television movie. My Date with the President’s Daughter.

Reinhart wore the custom creation on September 22, 2026, at the Los Angeles special screening of The Love Hypothesis. The romantic comedy, based on Ali Hazelwood’s bestselling novel, began streaming on Prime Video on September 23.

The pink dress was more than a red-carpet fashion choice. According to Reinhart, the original look became the starting point for a wider idea behind her fashion choices during the movie’s promotional tour.

Lili Reinhart’s Pink Dress Brings Back a ’90s Movie Look

The custom Miu Miu design takes inspiration from the pink velvet mini dress worn by Elisabeth Harnois as Hallie Richmond in My Date with the President’s Daughter.

The original 1998 movie follows Hallie, the daughter of the U.S. president, during an unexpected night out with a teenage boy. One of the film’s memorable fashion moments comes when Hallie changes into a striking pink dress for her evening plans.

The look later developed a nostalgic following among viewers who remembered the Disney-era movie.

For Reinhart, however, the dress carried a more personal connection.

The Dress Inspired by Reinhart’s Movie Fashion Homages

During the Los Angeles premiere, Reinhart explained that the pink dress helped spark the idea of recreating memorable outfits from movies she loved growing up.

Her Love Hypothesis press-tour wardrobe included references to several well-known romantic films. These included the yellow dress associated with Kate Hudson in How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, a floral look connected to Brittany Murphy in Uptown Girls, and a purple slip-dress-and-coat combination inspired by Jennifer Garner’s look in 13 Going on 30.

Reinhart also referenced films such as Ever After and Atonement. Her choices therefore extended beyond traditional romantic comedies.

As reported by E! News, Reinhart said she wanted to place romantic comedies alongside romance dramas rather than treating the genre as something less serious.

Miu Miu Created a Custom Version for Reinhart

For the final Los Angeles premiere, Miu Miu created a custom version of the pink dress specifically for Reinhart.

Teen Vogue reported that the custom design was modelled after Harnois’ original velvet mini dress. The publication also noted that the original costume had been sourced for the 1998 movie by costume designer Delphine White.

Reinhart described having a custom Miu Miu creation as particularly meaningful. The dress also gave her a physical keepsake connected to the fashion concept she had developed throughout the promotional campaign.

Elisabeth Harnois Once Felt Self-Conscious in the Original Dress

The history of the pink dress adds another layer to Reinhart’s tribute.

Harnois was 18 when she played Hallie in My Date with the President’s Daughter. She previously recalled feeling uncomfortable when she first saw the costume because it was tight and short.

Harnois said she even asked whether she could wear another outfit. The costume designer declined, and the dress ultimately became one of the movie’s most recognisable looks.

Years later, Harnois reflected on the unexpected legacy of the outfit. She told E! News that she was grateful the costume had become so closely associated with the film and had even become a popular Halloween reference.

Interestingly, Harnois has also explained that she did not end up keeping the famous pink dress. She once believed it might have been stored with her other belongings but later clarified that she did not have it.

‘The Love Hypothesis’ Is Now Streaming on Prime Video

Reinhart’s fashion tribute arrived as The Love Hypothesis began its streaming release.

The movie stars Reinhart as Olive Smith, a Ph.D. candidate who becomes involved in a fake relationship with university professor Adam Carlsen, played by Tom Bateman. Rachel Marsh, Nicholas Duvernay, Jaboukie Young-White and Arty Froushan also appear in the film.

Directed by Claire Scanlon and written by Sarah Rothschild, the movie is adapted from Ali Hazelwood’s bestselling romance novel. Prime Video lists the film as a romance and comedy, with a September 23, 2026, streaming release.

The movie is now available to stream on Prime Video.

Why Reinhart’s Red-Carpet Look Stands Out

The pink Miu Miu dress connects several generations of movie fashion in one appearance.

For viewers who grew up with My Date with the President’s Daughter, the design recalls a recognisable piece of late-1990s Disney television. For Reinhart, it also represents the beginning of a larger tribute to the romance movies that influenced her.

Rather than simply recreating a vintage costume, the actress worked with Miu Miu to reinterpret the idea for a modern red carpet.

That makes the look part of the larger fashion story surrounding The Love Hypothesis—one built around nostalgia, movie references and Reinhart’s own connection to romantic cinema.
