Ellen Pompeo Lands New Hulu Role in ‘Not a Sound’ Medical Mystery

Ellen Pompeo is heading back into the world of medical drama, but her next character will be far removed from Meredith Grey.

The Grey’s Anatomy star is attached to lead Not a Sound, a new mystery drama in development at Hulu and 20th Television. The project will give Pompeo a very different kind of role after more than two decades as one of television’s most recognisable doctors.

Pompeo will portray Amelia Winn, a former emergency room nurse whose life changes dramatically after a hit-and-run accident causes her to lose her hearing. Her story takes another dark turn when she discovers a dead body and becomes drawn into a dangerous mystery.

The series is based on Heather Gudenkauf’s 2017 novel Not a Sound. David E. Kelley Productions is developing the adaptation.

Ellen Pompeo’s New Role Is Far From Meredith Grey

For years, audiences have known Ellen Pompeo as Dr Meredith Grey, the central character of Grey’s Anatomy.

Her role in Not a Sound, however, moves her away from the familiar world of surgeons and hospital relationships.

Pompeo will play Amelia Winn, an ER nurse whose career is disrupted after a hit-and-run leaves her deaf. The accident forces Amelia to adjust to a completely different life.

Not a Sound is based on Heather Gudenkauf’s psychological thriller of the same name.

The original story follows Amelia Winn after a devastating accident leaves her unable to hear. She is also forced to leave behind the career she once had.

While trying to adapt to her new circumstances, Amelia makes a disturbing discovery involving a former colleague.

Instead of ignoring what she has found, she starts looking for answers. As the investigation develops, Amelia begins confronting questions about her own accident and the events surrounding it.

The story combines mystery, crime and personal drama, giving Pompeo a character very different from Meredith Grey.

Who Is Making the Hulu Series?

Not a Sound is being developed by David E. Kelley Productions for Hulu and 20th Television.

Matthew Tinker and Annakate Chappell are attached as writers, while Azazel Jacobs is set to direct.

David E. Kelley is also involved as an executive producer. Pompeo is expected to executive produce through her production company, Calamity Jane.

The creative team brings experience in television drama and mystery storytelling, making the adaptation an interesting addition to Hulu’s scripted lineup.

Ellen Pompeo Has Not Completely Left ‘Grey’s Anatomy’

Pompeo’s new project does not mean she has walked away from Grey’s Anatomy.

She has remained connected to the ABC medical drama since its debut in 2005. Although her on-screen presence has become more limited in recent seasons, Meredith Grey remains an important part of the show’s identity.

Grey’s Anatomy has also been renewed for Season 23.

The actress was also involved with Good American Family, a limited series inspired by the complicated story surrounding Natalia Grace.

Hulu renewed the anthology series for a second season, although the next installment is expected to explore a different real-life story rather than continue the first season’s storyline.

Pompeo’s involvement in the project further demonstrates her expanding relationship with Hulu beyond acting in Not a Sound.

Hulu has not announced a premiere date for Not a Sound.

The project is currently in development, so details about production, additional casting and filming are still expected to emerge.
