The Dana Chandler murder case has remained one of Kansas’ most debated criminal cases for more than two decades. It began with the 2002 killings of Mike Sisco and Karen Harkness in Topeka and eventually led to three separate murder trials involving Sisco’s former wife.
Chandler was first convicted in 2012. That conviction was later overturned because of prosecutorial misconduct. A second trial ended without a verdict in 2022. Then, in 2025, a third trial ended with another conviction.

What happened to Mike Sisco and Karen Harkness?
Mike Sisco and Karen Harkness were killed inside their Topeka, Kansas, home on July 7, 2002.
The couple had planned to spend time with their parents that day. When family members arrived and received no answer at the front door, they went around the house and discovered that a sliding door was partly open.
Inside, they found Sisco and Harkness dead in their bedroom.
Investigators determined that both victims had been shot multiple times. Authorities believed a 9mm semiautomatic handgun was used, but the weapon was never recovered.
There was also no evidence that the killings were part of a conventional robbery. Cash and jewellery reportedly remained at the home.
The investigation eventually went cold.
How did Dana Chandler become a suspect?
Chandler was Sisco’s ex-wife. Investigators questioned her shortly after the killings, but she was not immediately arrested.
The case received renewed national attention years later when CBS’ 48 Hours examined the unsolved murders in 2009. Chandler was publicly identified as a suspect following the broadcast.

After watching coverage of the case, the couple became convinced that Chandler had been wrongly convicted. They spent years studying court records and pursuing questions about the investigation and prosecution.
Their efforts eventually helped draw further attention to alleged problems in the original case.
Their involvement is a major part of A Killer Story. Rather than focusing only on the murders, the documentary also examines how the Umbehrs’ determination affected the legal battle surrounding Chandler.

Chandler was retried in 2022.
That proceeding ended in a mistrial after jurors were unable to reach a unanimous verdict. As a result, there was no new conviction at that stage.

Chandler’s third murder trial began in February 2025 in Pottawatomie County, Kansas.
The proceedings took an unusual turn when Chandler dismissed her attorneys shortly before opening statements and chose to represent herself.
She later spent seven days testifying in her own defence.
Chandler maintained that she was not in Kansas when the murders happened. She also disputed having owned or possessed a 9mm firearm.
Despite her defence, the jury found her guilty of two counts of first-degree murder.
She was sentenced in June 2025 to life imprisonment, with no possibility of parole for 50 years.
Where is Dana Chandler now?
Chandler remains imprisoned following her 2025 conviction.
Recent reporting says she is serving her sentence at Topeka Correctional Facility-Central in Kansas. She is also appealing the conviction.
A request for another trial was previously denied after a judge determined that the filing deadline had been missed.
According to recent reporting based on Kansas Department of Corrections records, Chandler’s earliest possible release date is December 8, 2063.

Why does the Dana Chandler murder case remain controversial?
The case continues to attract attention because it has passed through three trials with very different outcomes.
Chandler’s first conviction was overturned. Her second trial ended with a hung jury. Her third trial resulted in a conviction and life sentence.
At the same time, the case has long raised questions about the strength of the physical evidence. Reporting on the documentary notes that investigators never recovered the murder weapon and that DNA or fingerprints connecting Chandler directly to the crime scene were not found.
However, the absence of forensic evidence does not by itself establish innocence. Chandler’s 2025 conviction remains in place while her appeal proceeds.
