Anne Hathaway will have to wait a little longer to take on the full Hot Ones challenge. The actress revealed that her doctor advised her not to appear on the spicy interview show while she is pregnant with her third child.
Hathaway discussed the decision while promoting Verity, the upcoming psychological thriller based on Colleen Hoover’s bestselling novel. She had originally hoped to complete the famous hot-wing challenge as part of the film’s promotional campaign.
However, her pregnancy changed those plans.
Why Anne Hathaway Skipped Hot Ones
Hathaway explained that she expected to participate in Hot Ones because the show is actually part of Verity.
Her character, bestselling author Verity Crawford, appears on a fictional version of the Sean Evans-hosted series in the movie. Hathaway thought appearing on the real show during the film’s press tour would be a natural extension of that storyline.
But after becoming pregnant, Hathaway said her doctor advised her against doing the challenge because she could potentially go into early labor.
As a result, she has not completed the real-life Hot Ones gauntlet.
Hathaway joked that she might finally take on the challenge next year.
Hathaway Ate Real Wings While Filming Verity
Although Hathaway has not completed the real Hot Ones challenge, she did experience part of it while making Verity.
During filming, she ate the first three wings for real before switching to dummy wings for the remainder of the scene.
For Hathaway, completing the challenge as herself is different from performing it as a character.
She explained that she wanted her first full experience with the challenge to be genuine rather than something she was simultaneously acting through.
Why Hot Ones Appears in Verity
The fictional Hot Ones appearance was part of Hathaway’s broader idea for establishing Verity Crawford as a major cultural figure.
The character also participates in other recognizable media appearances within the movie. Hathaway said the approach was designed to make Verity feel like someone audiences would recognize beyond her books.
That makes the real-life promotional connection with Hot Ones particularly fitting for the movie.

Hathaway announced her third pregnancy in June 2026. She and husband Adam Shulman are already parents to two sons.

Hathaway has also said that she and Shulman know the baby’s sex but have not publicly revealed it.
