Madonna, Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande Lead a Star-Studded 2026 MTV VMA Race

2026 MTV VMAs Nominations Put Madonna and Taylor Swift at the Center of the Race

The 2026 MTV VMAs nominations have set up a major showdown between two generations of pop royalty. Madonna leads this year’s field with 11 nominations, while Taylor Swift follows with nine.

MTV announced the nominees on Aug. 18. Ariana Grande and Sabrina Carpenter are next with seven nominations each, while Bruno Mars, PinkPantheress and Zara Larsson earned five apiece.

The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards will take place on Sunday, Sept. 27, at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles. The ceremony will air live on CBS and MTV and will also stream on Paramount+ in the United States.

For Madonna and Swift, however, this year’s nominations are about more than adding another trophy. Both artists have a chance to change the VMA record books.

Madonna Leads the 2026 VMA Nominations

Madonna enters the 2026 ceremony with the largest nomination haul of the year.

Her 11 nominations include some of the ceremony’s biggest awards. She is nominated for Artist of the Year and Video of the Year for “Confessions II – The Film”.

She is also nominated for Song of the Year and Best Collaboration for “Bring Your Love”, her collaboration with Sabrina Carpenter. Additional nominations recognise the project’s dance, direction, art direction, cinematography, editing, choreography and visual effects.

The nominations add another milestone to Madonna’s long relationship with the VMAs. According to the official announcement, she has 19 competitive VMA wins and has received nominations in every decade of her career.

She also became the first solo female artist to receive the Video Vanguard Award in 1986.

Madonna Could Reach Another Major VMA Milestone

Madonna’s 11 nominations create an interesting possibility for the September ceremony.

Taylor Swift and Beyoncé currently have 30 VMA wins each, according to CBS/AP’s report. Madonna has 19 competitive wins, so winning all 11 of her competitive nominations would bring her to 30.

That makes the 2026 ceremony particularly significant for the veteran performer.

A clean sweep would be difficult, given the number of categories and the strength of the competition. Still, Madonna’s nomination total puts her in an unusually strong position.

Taylor Swift Has Nine Chances to Make VMA History

Taylor Swift is the second-most nominated artist of the 2026 VMAs, with nine nominations.

Her leading nomination is for Video of the Year for “The Fate of Ophelia”. She is also competing for Artist of the Year and Best Pop.

The remaining nominations recognise several creative aspects of her work, including direction, art direction, cinematography, editing, choreography and visual effects.

Swift already has 30 VMA wins, tying Beyoncé for the record among the ceremony’s most-awarded artists. That means even one victory in 2026 would give Swift sole possession of the top spot.

That record adds an extra layer to Swift’s nominations. Her goal is not simply to win another Moon Person. A single victory could make her the most-awarded artist in VMA history.

Who Is Competing for Video of the Year?

The 2026 Video of the Year category features six nominees.

They are:

  • Ariana Grande — “hate that i made you love me”
  • Bruno Mars — “I Just Might”
  • GENER8ION — “STORM” starring Yung Lean
  • Madonna — “Confessions II – The Film”
  • Sabrina Carpenter — “Tears”
  • Taylor Swift — “The Fate of Ophelia”

The category brings together established superstars and newer acts, making it one of the most closely watched races of the night.

Ariana Grande and Sabrina Carpenter Are Strong Contenders

Madonna and Swift are not the only major names dominating the nominations.

Ariana Grande and Sabrina Carpenter each received seven nominations. Their presence gives the ceremony a strong mix of established pop stars and artists from the newer generation.

Bruno Mars, PinkPantheress and Zara Larsson each collected five nominations. LISA received four, while Shakira and Tate McRae each earned three.

The Artist of the Year category is especially competitive. Madonna, Swift, Grande, Mars, Carpenter and Morgan Wallen are all nominated.

26 Artists Receive Their First VMA Nomination

The 2026 VMAs are also introducing a large group of first-time nominees.

MTV says 26 artists are first-time VMA nominees this year. The group includes CORTIS, Don Toliver, Kali Uchis, Noah Kahan, Olivia Dean, Sienna Spiro and Yung Lean, among others.

Their inclusion highlights the changing makeup of the awards. While Madonna and Swift represent decades of VMA history, newer performers are gaining recognition across major categories.

That balance could make the 2026 ceremony especially interesting for viewers following the next generation of music stars.

Best Dance Category Returns to the VMAs

Another notable change is the return of Best Dance.

The category is coming back after a seven-year absence. Madonna, Tate McRae, Harry Styles, Lady Gaga, Doechii, Bebe Rexha, Faithless and PinkPantheress are among the acts recognised in the returning category.

The decision gives dance-focused music another dedicated category and adds another opportunity for Madonna to collect a trophy.

When Are the 2026 MTV VMAs?

The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards are scheduled for Sept. 27, 2026, at the Peacock Theatre in Los Angeles.

The ceremony will begin at 7:30 p.m. ET / 4:30 p.m. PT and will air on CBS and MTV. Paramount+ will also stream the event in the United States.

The show will be available globally on Paramount+ and MTV the following day, according to Paramount’s announcement.

How to Vote for the 2026 MTV VMAs

Fan voting has opened in 13 categories.

According to Paramount, voting is available through Sept. 25 at 6 p.m. ET. The exception is Best New Artist, where voting remains open during the ceremony.

That gives fans several weeks to influence the outcome before the winners are revealed in Los Angeles.

What to Watch for at the 2026 VMAs

The biggest storyline heading into the ceremony is clear: Madonna versus Taylor Swift for another chapter in VMA history.

Madonna has the most nominations this year and could move closer to the all-time wins record. Swift, meanwhile, needs only one victory to move ahead of Beyoncé and become the most-awarded artist in VMA history.

At the same time, Grande and Carpenter have strong nomination totals, while artists such as PinkPantheress, LISA, Tate McRae and several first-time nominees could produce surprises.

With fan voting underway and the ceremony still weeks away, the 2026 VM I have already created plenty of reasons for music fans to watch.

The final results will be revealed when the MTV Video Music Awards arrive in Los Angeles on Sept. 27.
