Constance Zimmer Reveals Private Breast Cancer Battle at 55

Constance Zimmer has revealed that she privately battled breast cancer earlier this year while continuing to work and promote her series Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette.

The 55-year-old actress shared the news on Instagram on October 4, during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Zimmer said she was diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), also known as Stage 0 breast cancer, on March 13, 2026.

She kept the diagnosis largely private while facing treatment and maintaining her professional commitments. Zimmer has now said she is cancer-free.

Constance Zimmer Opens Up About Her Breast Cancer Diagnosis

Zimmer explained that she was away from home when her doctor delivered the diagnosis over Zoom.

The news came as a major shock. She then had to contact her husband, Russ Lamoureux, before returning home to tell their daughter in person.

Zimmer also described the emotional impact of the diagnosis. She said she suddenly found herself speaking with numerous doctors while trying to process what was happening.

Her disclosure came during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, making the story particularly personal for the actress.

Zimmer Was Diagnosed With DCIS

Zimmer said her diagnosis was DCIS, or ductal carcinoma in situ.

DCIS is a non-invasive form of breast cancer in which abnormal cells are confined to the milk ducts. It is often described as Stage 0 breast cancer because the abnormal cells have not spread beyond the ducts. The National Cancer Institute notes that DCIS generally has an excellent prognosis when treated.

Treatment decisions can vary depending on the individual case. Common options include breast-conserving surgery, such as a lumpectomy, or a mastectomy. Radiation therapy may also be recommended after a lumpectomy.

Constance Zimmer Chose a Lumpectomy

Zimmer said a mastectomy was initially presented as the most recommended option.

However, she questioned whether removing the breast was the right choice for her.

After consulting a breast cancer surgeon, Zimmer learned that a lumpectomy could allow her to preserve most of her breast tissue. She ultimately chose the breast-conserving approach.

According to Zimmer, the treatment required three surgeries over three consecutive weeks. She later underwent radiation therapy as part of her treatment.

A lumpectomy removes the cancerous area along with some surrounding tissue while preserving the breast. Radiation is commonly used afterward to reduce the risk of DCIS or breast cancer returning in the same breast.

She Kept Her Diagnosis Private During the Love Story Press Tour

Zimmer was dealing with her diagnosis while publicly promoting Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette.

The FX/Hulu series premiered earlier in 2026, with Zimmer portraying Ann Marie Messina, the mother of Carolyn Bessette.

At the same time, Zimmer was undergoing treatment away from the public eye. She later revealed that she continued with the show’s press activities while keeping her health situation private.

The actress also received an Emmy nomination during this period. The Television Academy lists Zimmer as a 2026 nominee for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for her performance as Ann Marie Messina in Love Story.

That made an already demanding period even more complicated, as Zimmer was balancing medical treatment with one of the biggest professional moments of her year.

Constance Zimmer Says She Is Now Cancer-Free

After undergoing three surgeries and radiation treatment, Zimmer said she is now cancer-free.

The actress reflected on the contrast between her private medical experience and her public career obligations.

Her story also highlights the emotional side of a cancer diagnosis. Although DCIS is an early form of breast cancer with a generally excellent prognosis, receiving the diagnosis can still be overwhelming for patients and their families.

Zimmer has indicated that she plans to discuss more about her experience in a future episode of her podcast, Talk Fifty to Me.

What Is DCIS or Stage 0 Breast Cancer?

Ductal carcinoma in situ develops when abnormal cells are found inside the milk ducts of the breast.

Unlike invasive breast cancer, DCIS has not spread outside the ducts. However, doctors treat it because some cases can progress to invasive disease if left untreated.

Treatment depends on factors such as the size and location of the DCIS, its characteristics, and the patient’s individual circumstances.

For some patients, treatment can involve a lumpectomy followed by radiation. Others may be advised to have a mastectomy. Medical decisions should be made with a qualified healthcare team based on an individual’s diagnosis.

A Private Health Battle Became a Public Story

For months, Zimmer continued appearing publicly while dealing with something deeply personal.

Now, by sharing her experience during Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the actress has offered a glimpse into a difficult chapter that was largely invisible to the public.

Her disclosure comes after treatment and recovery, with Zimmer saying she is grateful to be cancer-free.

For the Love Story actress, the year brought both a serious health challenge and an important career milestone. Her decision to share the experience gives fans a fuller picture of what was happening behind the scenes.

Sources and context

Information about Zimmer’s diagnosis and treatment comes from her public Instagram disclosure and reporting from outlets including UPI and E! News. Medical context about DCIS and lumpectomy is based on information from the National Cancer Institute and Mayo Clinic.
