Charlize Theron Shares Advice to Her Younger Self After 30 Years in Hollywood

Charlize Theron has spent more than three decades building a career across dramas, action movies, comedies and major Hollywood productions. Now, the Oscar-winning actress says she would tell her younger self to slow down and enjoy the journey.

During the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project (CTAOP) Block Party in Los Angeles in September 2026, Theron reflected on how intensely she approached the early years of her career.

Her advice was surprisingly simple: take a breath, relax and appreciate the experience.

Charlize Theron’s advice to her younger self

Looking back on her career, Theron said she would encourage her younger self not to rush through every opportunity.

She explained that she had been moving at an extremely fast pace when she was younger. Like many ambitious people starting out, she was focused on making the most of every opportunity.

With decades of experience behind her, however, Theron’s perspective has changed.

The actress said enjoying the journey matters just as much as chasing the next achievement.

Her comments offer a glimpse into how she now views a career that has included major awards, physically demanding roles and some of Hollywood’s most recognisable films.

From early movie roles to an Oscar-winning performance

Theron’s film career began in the 1990s, with early appearances eventually leading to more substantial roles.

One of the defining moments came with Monster, Patty Jenkins’ 2003 crime drama. Theron portrayed real-life murderer Aileen Wuornos in the film and underwent a major physical and performance transformation for the role.

Her work earned her the Academy Award for Best Actress at the 2004 Oscars.

The performance helped establish Theron as an actress capable of moving far beyond conventional Hollywood roles.

She later earned additional Oscar nominations for North Country and Bombshell, demonstrating the range she had developed throughout her career.

Charlize Theron’s career has gone far beyond one genre.

Over the years, Theron has moved between very different types of characters.

Her credits include films such as The Italian Job, Æon Flux, North Country, Prometheus, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Fate of the Furious, Atomic Blonde, Tully, Bombshell and The Old Guard.

Her action work has become especially associated with demanding physical preparation.

As Imperator Furiosa in Mad Max: Fury Road, for example, Theron took on an intensely physical role that became one of the most recognisable performances of her career.

More recently, she joined Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. In an April 2026 interview with TODAY, Theron described her part in the film as relatively small and said she had not yet seen the finished movie at that point.

Her work with young people remains a major priority.

Acting, however, is only one part of Theron’s public work.

Through the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project, she supports locally led organisations working to improve the health and safety of young people in Southern Africa.

CTAOP says its work focuses on areas including sexual and reproductive health and rights, gender-based violence prevention and youth leadership. The organisation emphasises long-term partnerships with community-based groups rather than imposing outside solutions.

That long-term approach is particularly important to Theron.

At the 2026 block party, she discussed the importance of maintaining relationships with organisations and supporting them over time.

CTAOP’s own approach similarly describes its partnerships as being built around trust, mutual respect and locally determined needs.

Motherhood has also shaped Theron’s activism.

Theron’s advocacy is closely connected to her interest in the safety and wellbeing of young people.

In a separate 2026 interview with PEOPLE, she discussed how raising her two daughters has strengthened her determination to help create safer environments for children and young people.

She has previously adopted daughters Jackson and August, and she has spoken about her longstanding interest in supporting young people, particularly girls.

For Theron, that commitment extends beyond her own family.

CTAOP’s stated goal is to help young people across Southern Africa live healthy and safe lives while giving communities the resources and opportunities needed to create lasting change.

Theron’s Hollywood journey continues.

Theron’s latest reflections show a different side of a career often defined by dramatic transformations and physically demanding performances.

From Monster to Mad Max: Fury Road, she has repeatedly taken on roles that required significant preparation and reinvention. Her career has also expanded into producing and advocacy.

Yet after more than 30 years in the entertainment industry, her advice to her younger self is not about working harder or chasing another achievement.

Instead, it is about appreciating the moment.

That perspective comes after a Hollywood journey that has included an Academy Award, multiple Oscar nominations, action franchises, acclaimed dramas and a growing commitment to supporting young people through CTAOP.

For Theron, the next chapter appears to be about continuing that work while remembering to enjoy the journey along the way.
