Why Heated Rivalry Got No 2026 Emmy Nominations Despite Its Huge Success

Heated rivalry: Emmy nominations became a major talking point around the 2026 Emmy Awards. The popular hockey romance attracted a large international audience and helped turn Connor Storrie and Hudson Williams into breakout stars. Yet the series itself did not receive a single competitive Primetime Emmy nomination.

The reason was not a lack of popularity or recognition from television audiences. Instead, Heated Rivalry was not eligible for the Primetime Emmy competition under the Television Academy’s rules for foreign productions.

The Television Academy’s official awards page currently lists the series with no competitive Emmy nominations. However, the show did receive a 2026 Television Academy Honours recognition.

Why Heated Rivalry Was Not Eligible for the Emmys

The key issue was the show’s production status.

Heated Rivalry was created as a Canadian series for Crave. Bell Media describes it as a Crave Original produced by Accent Aigu Entertainment in association with Bell Media’s Crave. HBO Max later acquired U.S. streaming rights.

That distinction matters under Emmy eligibility rules.

The Television Academy’s rules include specific requirements for foreign-produced programmes seeking consideration. A foreign production generally needs to meet the Academy’s conditions involving U.S. participation and the purpose of being shown on U.S. television.

In Heated Rivalry’s case, its Canadian production origins meant that its availability on HBO Max did not make the series eligible for the regular Primetime Emmy competition.

In other words, streaming the show in the United States did not change how the production itself was classified for Emmy purposes.

HBO Max Distribution Did Not Change the Show’s Eligibility

The situation can be confusing for American viewers.

Heated Rivalry was available on HBO Max in the United States after HBO Max acquired rights to the Canadian series. Warner Bros. Discovery’s announcement described the show as originally created for Canada’s Crave and confirmed its U.S. HBO Max debut in November 2025.

However, distribution and production are not necessarily the same thing.

The series was created for Crave and produced through Canadian partners. Bell Media has continued to identify Heated Rivalry as a Crave Original, while international distributors have handled its availability in other markets.

That distinction explains why the show’s enormous U.S. streaming presence did not automatically put it on the Emmy ballot.

Connor Storrie Still Made the 2026 Emmy List

There was, however, an important exception for one of the show’s breakout stars.

Connor Storrie received a 2026 Emmy nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series for his appearance on Saturday Night Live. The Television Academy specifically included Storrie among the year’s new and first-time nominees.

His nomination was separate from Heated Rivalry.

Storrie’s recognition therefore gave fans of the hockey romance a reason to celebrate even though the series itself could not compete.

His Emmy appearance also highlighted just how quickly the actor’s profile had grown following the success of Heated Rivalry. Current coverage of the ceremony described it as Storrie’s first Emmy nomination and first appearance at the awards as a nominee.

Heated Rivalry Still Earned Major Television Recognition

Although the series missed the competitive Emmy categories, it was not completely overlooked by the Television Academy.

Heated Rivalry received a 2026 Television Academy Honours recognition. The Academy’s official listing identifies the programme as an Accent Aigu Entertainment production in association with Bell Media’s Crave.

The recognition is significant because the Television Academy Honours highlights programmes that address important social issues and have an impact beyond traditional entertainment awards.

So while fans did not see Heated Rivalry competing for acting, writing or series Emmys, the Academy still formally recognised the show’s broader impact.

The Show’s Success Has Continued Beyond Awards Season

The absence of Emmy nominations has not slowed the show’s momentum.

Bell Media has described Heated Rivalry as its most successful Crave Original debut, reporting that its first seven-day streams made it the platform’s No. 1 original-series debut at the time. The company subsequently renewed the series for a second season.

The series has also expanded its international reach.

Bell Media says Heated Rivalry is distributed internationally in more than 130 countries. The company has also announced additional cast members for Season 2, which is scheduled to premiere in spring 2027.

That means the show’s awards-season story is only one part of a much bigger success story.

What Happens With Heated Rivalry Season 2?

Fans will not have to say goodbye to Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov just yet.

Season 2 is currently in production, with Hudson Williams and Connor Storrie returning alongside several newly announced cast members. Bell Media has confirmed a spring 2027 premiere for the next season.

The second season will continue to build on the world established by Rachel Reid’s Game Changers books.

For fans who hoped to see Heated Rivalry compete at the 2026 Emmys, the eligibility issue was frustrating. But its continued international popularity, Television Academy Honours recognition and upcoming second season show that the series’ cultural impact extends well beyond the traditional awards race.

Why the Heated Rivalry Emmy Snub Matters

Calling the situation an ordinary “Emmy snub” can be misleading.

A traditional snub happens when a show or performer is eligible but fails to receive enough votes for a nomination. Heated rivalry was different. The series itself was ineligible for the competitive Primetime Emmy categories, meaning Emmy voters were not simply choosing another show over it.

That distinction is important for understanding the 2026 Emmy nominations.

The Television Academy’s official records show no competitive nominations for Heated Rivalry, while separately recognising the series through Television Academy Honours.

Meanwhile, Storrie’s individual nomination demonstrates that the show’s talent could still enter the Emmy competition when working on an eligible U.S. television programme.

The Bottom Line

The Heated Rivalry Emmy nominations story is ultimately less about an awards rejection and more about eligibility rules.

The Canadian-produced series became a major international hit after its Crave debut and subsequent distribution through HBO Max and other platforms. Yet its production status prevented it from competing in the regular 2026 Primetime Emmy race.

Connor Storrie still broke through with an individual nomination for Saturday Night Live, giving the show’s fans an Emmy connection of their own.

And with Season 2 scheduled for spring 2027, Heated Rivalry is far from finished making headlines.
