Practical Magic 2 is bringing Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman back to the magical world of Sally and Gillian Owens. However, the sequel is not relying on nostalgia alone.
Nearly three decades after the original Practical Magic, the filmmakers have recreated one of the movie’s most recognisable locations: the Owens family home.
The Victorian-style house played an important role in the 1998 film. Although it looked like a real home on screen, the exterior was actually an architectural shell constructed for the production on Washington’s San Juan Island.
For the sequel, Bullock, who also serves as an executive producer, reportedly took a close interest in making sure the recreated set stayed faithful to the original.
Sandra Bullock Wanted the Practical Magic 2 Set to Feel Familiar
One of the biggest challenges with Practical Magic 2 was recreating the atmosphere of a film that has developed a devoted following over the years.
Maisie Williams, who joins Joey King in the sequel as one of Sally’s grown daughters, recalled how carefully the production approached the returning house.
Williams said Bullock paid attention to small details, including the tiles used in the design. Some of the original tiles were no longer available, so new ones had to be created.
That attention to detail helped make the set feel connected to the 1998 movie rather than simply resembling it.
The goal was more than rebuilding a house. It was about bringing back a visual part of the Owens sisters’ world.
What Happened to the Original Owens House?
Fans of the original Practical Magic may be surprised to learn that the famous Owens home no longer exists.
The house was constructed specifically for the movie’s exterior scenes. It was not a complete, functioning Victorian residence.
After filming wrapped, the structure was demolished the following day.
The interiors were also created specifically for the production. Production designer Robin Standerfer designed those spaces, helping establish the distinctive look associated with Sally and Gillian’s home.
The house became so memorable that Barbra Streisand reportedly contacted the producers after seeing the film because she wanted to buy it.
Practical Magic 2 Reunites the Original Sisters
At the heart of Practical Magic 2 are Bullock and Kidman.
The actresses played sisters Sally and Gillian Owens in the original film. Sally was the more reserved sister, while Gillian embraced a more adventurous personality.
Their relationship was central to the original story, which followed the sisters as they confronted a family curse surrounding love and loss.
Director Griffin Dunne previously recalled that Bullock and Kidman developed convincing chemistry despite not having known each other before working on the film.
That connection became one of the memorable elements of the original Practical Magic.
The Sequel Brings Back Familiar Faces
The returning cast also includes Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest.
They are set to reprise their roles as the Owens sisters’ eccentric aunts, Frances and Jet.
Their characters helped give the original movie much of its humour and personality.
Meanwhile, the sequel introduces a new generation of Owens family members. Joey King and Maisie Williams play Sally’s now-grown daughters.
This allows Practical Magic 2 to expand the family story while still keeping its connection to the original characters.
Why Practical Magic Still Has a Strong Legacy
When Practical Magic arrived in 1998, it blended romance, comedy, family drama and supernatural elements.
The movie was based on Alice Hoffman’s 1995 novel of the same name.
Over time, its distinctive visual style, memorable characters and themes of sisterhood helped the film develop a lasting fan following.
That history makes the return of the Owens family particularly significant.
Instead of completely starting over, Practical Magic 2 is building on elements audiences already recognise.
The Original Movie Had a Darker Story
The original Practical Magic also went through major changes during production.
According to director Griffin Dunne, an earlier version placed more emphasis on horror and domestic violence. The studio ultimately felt that version was too intense.
Screenwriter Akiva Goldsman has also discussed an earlier cut that gave more attention to Gillian’s storyline and contained darker supernatural elements.
The finished movie moved toward a balance of romance, comedy, family relationships and supernatural drama.
That mixture became a defining part of Practical Magic.
A Long Road to Practical Magic 2
The upcoming sequel is not the first attempt to continue the story.
A television pilot was developed in 2004 with Kim Delaney as Sally and Jeri Ryan as Gillian. Bullock was involved as an executive producer, but the project did not become a series.
Another remake was considered by ABC Family in 2010.
Later, HBO ordered a pilot for Rules of Magic in 2019. That project was designed as a 1960s-set story focusing on the Owens aunts, Franny and Jet, but it was never produced as a completed series.
Now, Practical Magic 2 finally brings Bullock and Kidman back to the roles that made the Owens sisters so memorable.
When Is Practical Magic 2 Coming Out?
Practical Magic 2 is scheduled to arrive in theatres on September 11, 2026.
The film’s return gives long-time fans another chance to revisit the Owens family’s supernatural world while introducing the next generation.
With the original stars returning and familiar production details being recreated, the sequel is clearly embracing its connection to the 1998 classic.
And for fans who remember the Owens house, the rebuilt set may be one of the most nostalgic parts of the entire movie.
