Shaquille O’Neal Says Marvel Turned Down His Avengers Dream Because He Was Too Recognizable

Shaquille O’Neal has revealed that his long-running dream of appearing in an Avengers movie never became reality. The NBA Hall of Famer said Marvel executives believed audiences would have a difficult time seeing him as a fictional character because he is so recognisable.

O’Neal, 54, discussed his Hollywood ambitions in an interview with Variety published Aug. 21, 2026. He explained that his celebrity has sometimes worked against him when he wants to take on serious or action-orientated roles.

According to O’Neal, the issue was not simply his physical size. Instead, executives were concerned that his fame would distract viewers from whatever character he played.

O’Neal said Hollywood executives had told him he was “too big”, explaining that audiences would immediately recognise him rather than become immersed in the character.

That concern also affected his chances of playing ordinary fictional roles. O’Neal said that if he appeared as someone such as a doctor, viewers might still see the famous basketball star rather than the character.

O’Neal said he specifically approached Marvel about appearing in the Avengers franchise.

He recalled being told that Marvel executives liked him and would have enjoyed working with him. However, they believed his appearance would immediately remind audiences that they were watching Shaquille O’Neal.

The basketball legend said he ultimately accepted the explanation, joking that his face was simply “too big time”.

The revelation is not entirely new. O’Neal had already spoken publicly about wanting an Avengers role in 2018, when he said he would like to join the franchise and even joked about fighting Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man.

Although Marvel never brought O’Neal into the MCU, the former basketball star is no stranger to superhero movies.

O’Neal played the title character in Steel, the 1997 DC superhero film. The movie gave him the chance to headline a comic-book adaptation years before his latest comments about Marvel.

O’Neal may have given up on becoming an Avenger, but he still has another major movie ambition.

During the Variety interview, he said he wants to make a movie with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. His proposed storyline is straightforward: he wants to fight Johnson on screen.

When asked whether he could beat the former WWE star, O’Neal confidently said he could.

The idea fits O’Neal’s long-running reputation for mixing entertainment with his larger-than-life personality. It also shows that his interest in acting remains strong despite the casting obstacles he says he has encountered.
