Jenna Fischer Reveals Why She Stepped Away From TV After The Office

Jenna Fischer Reveals Why She Stepped Away From Full-Time TV After The Office

Jenna Fischer has opened up about why she decided to step away from regular television acting after The Office. The actress said the demanding schedule of Splitting Up Together made her rethink what she wanted from her career while raising her young children.

Fischer discussed the decision during an August 18 appearance on Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s Dinner’s On Me podcast. She explained that although she enjoyed working with the cast of the ABC sitcom, the workload was difficult to balance with family life.

Jenna Fischer Says TV’s Demanding Schedule Changed Her Priorities

After The Office ended its nine-season run in 2013, Fischer continued working in television and film. One of her major post-office roles came in Splitting Up Together, where she starred alongside Oliver Hudson.

The ABC comedy ran for two seasons before it was cancelled in 2019. Looking back, Fischer said the experience helped her realise that being a television series regular was no longer the right fit for her.

According to Fischer, the hours on Splitting Up Together could reach roughly 65 to 70 hours a week.

She said the schedule was especially challenging because her children were still very young at the time.

Why Fischer Chose a Different Career Path

Fischer explained that she ultimately wanted greater control over her time.

Rather than continuing to pursue leading roles on television, she turned toward podcasting. In 2019, she launched Office Ladies with her former The Office co-star Angela Kinsey.

The podcast allowed Fischer to remain connected to the series that made her famous while giving her a more flexible professional routine.

She described the change as a positive decision because it provided both income and greater control over her schedule.

That flexibility also meant she could be present for everyday moments with her children, including school drop-offs, pick-ups, teacher meetings and concerts.

Office Ladies Became a New Chapter for Jenna Fischer

Fischer and Kinsey launched Office Ladies as a podcast centred on their experiences making The Office. The pair revisit episodes, share behind-the-scenes stories and discuss memories from their years on the NBC sitcom.

The podcast also created a different way for Fischer to stay involved with The Office without returning to the demanding routine of a traditional television series.

Interestingly, Fischer said her children grew up seeing her primarily as a podcaster rather than as Pam Beesly.

Because they were so young when she changed career direction, they did not fully understand that their mother had played one of the central characters in The Office.

What Happened to Jenna Fischer After The Office?

Fischer became widely known for playing Pam Beesly on The Office, opposite John Krasinski’s Jim Halpert. The NBC comedy ran from 2005 through 2013 and became one of television’s most recognisable workplace sitcoms.

After the series ended, Fischer continued acting but gradually moved toward projects that offered a different balance.

Her credits included Splitting Up Together, Blades of Glory, The 15:17 to Paris, Brad’s Status and the film adaptation of Mean Girls.

She also published The Actor’s Life: A Survival Guide in 2017, with Steve Carell writing the introduction.

Fischer’s Career Shift Comes as The Office Universe Continues

Fischer’s decision to step back from regular TV roles comes at an interesting time for fans of The Office.

The franchise recently expanded with The Paper, a Peacock series created by Greg Daniels and Michael Koman. Instead of returning to Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch, the series follows a struggling newspaper in Toledo, Ohio, while using the same documentary crew concept from The Office.

Oscar Nuñez is the only original The Office cast member to return as a regular part of the new series’ cast, reprising his role as Oscar Martinez.

That means Fischer’s Pam Beesly remains part of the original show’s legacy rather than becoming part of the new series’ main story.

Why Jenna Fischer’s Decision Resonates With The Office Fans

Fischer’s comments offer a more personal explanation for a career choice that might otherwise look like a simple move away from acting.

For her, the decision was closely connected to time, family and the realities of working on a television production.

Her experience also highlights how a successful actor can redefine their career after reaching a major milestone. Fischer did not completely leave entertainment. Instead, she found a format that allowed her to keep working while having more control over her schedule.

For The Office fans, that has meant getting more of Fischer’s perspective through Office Ladies rather than seeing her regularly appear in scripted television.

Fischer’s Career Is About More Than Pam Beesly

Pam Beesly remains Fischer’s signature role, but her career after The Office has taken a different shape.

Her latest comments make clear that the change was not simply about losing interest in acting. Instead, the demands of regular television helped her decide what kind of professional life worked best for her family.

For Fischer, podcasting became a way to remain creatively active without giving up the flexibility she valued.
